Bank of Greece, DIESOI
The Historical Archives of the Bank of Greece, in the context of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History (DIESOI), jointly organised with the Athens University of Economics and Business and Panteion University, invite you to the lecture entitled:
“Greece in transition: internal migration and electoral contests between 1952-1981”
Speaker: Thanasis Stavrakoudis (University of Ioannina)
A few words on the topic:
This lecture aims to examine the changes in the preferences of the Greek electorate in the period 1952-1981 and correlate them with the evolution of internal migration. This period was marked by massive population flows from the countryside to the large urban centres, at a time when the Greek authorities’ practice was not to register new residents in the relevant municipal registers upon arrival, but only after several years. The speaker will present the findings of his study on the population and housing censuses of 1951, 1961, 1971 and 1981, as well as the election results for the period 1952-1981. He will also present the conclusions of his research on the trends of the changes in the qualitative characteristics of migrants to urban centres and correlate them with changes in electoral preferences. The observations and primary results of the relevant research suggest that such a correlation exists in varying degrees for almost all constituencies in the country.
The sessions are held between 17:00-19:00 at the Museum of the Bank of Greece, 3, Amerikis Street, Athens, and are open to the public, without requiring prior registration. The lecture will be delivered in Greek.
The complete programme of upcoming lectures is available on the website of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History.
