01/04/2025 (Seminars)
Bank of Greece, DIESOI
The Historical Archives of the Bank of Greece, in the context of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History (DIESOI), jointly organised with the Athens University of Economics and Business and Panteion University, invite you to the lecture entitled:
“Geography, Agricultural Suitability and Diversity in Cultural Values”
Speaker: Petros Milionis (University of Groningen)
A few words on the topic:
The lecture aims to assess the historical importance of agriculture in shaping contemporary diversity in cultural values within societies. The empirical analysis shows that regions of the world characterised by greater spatial differentiation as regards the suitability of land for agriculture exhibit greater diversity in cultural values. This pattern is visible in a broad range of cultural values, both across countries and across regions within countries. In all cases, empirical results are correlated with spatial variations in historical cultivation practices and variations in geographical conditions, which affect the suitability of the land for different crops. It should be noted that the said analysis takes into account the potential impact of economic development on agricultural conditions. The final findings of the relevant research suggest that there is a deeply rooted link between geography and culture related to the historical importance of agriculture.
The sessions are held between 17:00-19:00 at the Museum of the Bank of Greece, 3, Amerikis Street, Athens, and are open to the public, without requiring prior registration. The lecture will be delivered in Greek.
The complete programme of upcoming lectures is available on the website of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History.
