The two-day visit to the Bank of Greece by the Chair of the Supervisory Board of the ECB (SSM), Claudia Buch, and the Chair of the Single Resolution Board (SRB), Dominique Laboureix, concluded today, Wednesday 26 February 2025.
The heads of the two European institutions met with Governor Yannis Stournaras and senior Bank of Greece officials. They also had the opportunity to meet with all the staff of the Supervisory Directorates of the Bank of Greece, whom they thanked for their commitment and excellent cooperation with the two European institutions.
In the context of their visit to the Bank of Greece, the heads of the two European supervisory authorities also met with representatives of the management bodies of Greek banks and the Hellenic Bank Association. Furthermore, they held meetings with officials from the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (ΙΟΒΕ) and the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP), as well as with academics and researchers in the fields of climate change and sustainability.
The topics discussed included the current situation and prospects of Greek banks, issues pertaining to supervision and cooperation between the two European institutions and the Bank of Greece, as well as the outlook and challenges for the Greek economy.
All the meetings were attended by Ms Christina Papaconstantinou, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Greece and member of the ECB Supervisory Board, and Mr. Ioannis Tsikripis, Director General for Prudential Supervision and Resolution of the Bank of Greece.
At the end of the visit, the Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras made the following statement: “We had the pleasure to host Ms. Claudia Buch, Chair of the Supervisory Board (SB) of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM), Mr. Dominique Laboureix, Chair of the Single Resolution Board (SRB), and their teams, on the occasion of their visit to Greece. This and similar visits to all the Member States of the Eurozone aim at strengthening the cooperation of the SSM and the SRB with the National Supervisory Authorities. During their visit to Greece, we had the opportunity to review all the issues concerning strategic priorities, policy, and regulatory developments of the banking sector, as well as institutional and macroeconomic developments. Ms. Buch and Mr. Laboureix had the opportunity to meet and discuss with the senior management of the Bank of Greece, as well as to exchange views with all the SSM- and SRB-related staff of the Bank of Greece.”
The Deputy Governor Christina Papaconstantinou noted that “The regular visits by the Chairs of the Supervisory Board of the SSM and the Single Resolution Board play an important role in the continual dialogue between European and national authorities. These productive discussions further promote our collaboration and co-ordination, while fostering mutual trust and a common supervisory culture. The more we adopt a one-team spirit approach, the more we value doing so, facilitating faster and deeper integration among all relevant authorities in Europe. This is key to addressing ongoing challenges.”
On her part, the Chair of the ECB Supervisory Board, Claudia Buch, made the following statement: “We had very constructive discussions here at the Bank of Greece and are grateful for the warm hospitality. The close cooperation in European banking supervision on issues of concern is invaluable for addressing existing and emerging risks in banks and helps to ensure financial stability across Europe.”.
The Chair of the Single Resolution Board, Dominique Laboureix, noted that “It was great to visit the Bank of Greece once again, to get an update first-hand on the progress being made in ensuring financial stability, while protecting the taxpayer. I want to thank the Greek authorities for their welcome this week and the excellent cooperation throughout the year”.
