10/03/2026 (Seminars)
Bank of Greece, DIESOI
The Historical Archives of the Bank of Greece, in the context of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History, jointly organised with the Athens University of Economics and Business and Panteion University, invite you to the lecture entitled:
“Deep indexing the archives of the German occupation of Greece (1941-1944/45): the "German Occupation Database" project”
Speaker: Valentin Schneider (National Hellenic Research Foundation)
A few words on the topic:
The speaker will present the research project entitled “Database of German military and paramilitary units in Greece 1941-1944/45”. The project started in 2019 and aims to identify and record all the German military and paramilitary units stationed for shorter or longer periods of time in Greece between April 1941, the date of the German invasion, and October 1944, the date of the retreat of the German troops (and May 1945 for some remote areas and islands). The lecture aspires to demonstrate how the database will be a tool for deepening the historical knowledge of the period in Greece, as it will help to identify German units involved in war crimes, further specify the numerical scope of the occupying forces and shed light on the structure and evolution of military and paramilitary units.
The sessions are held between 17:00-19:00 at the Museum of the Bank of Greece, 3 Amerikis Street, Athens, and are open to the public, without requiring prior registration. The lecture will be delivered in Greek.
The complete programme of upcoming lectures is available on the website of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History.
