Bank of Greece, DIESOI
The Historical Archives of the Bank of Greece, in the context of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History, jointly organised with the Athens University of Economics and Business and Panteion University, invite you to the lecture entitled:
“The decline of mortality in Greece: The case of Hermoupolis (1859-1940)”
Michail Raftakis (University of Bologna)
A few words on the topic:
Few studies have examined demographic phenomena in Greece in the 19th or the first half of the 20th century, mainly due to the discontinuity of published statistics, but also due to the non-systematic registry record-keeping in most municipalities before the mid-1920s. The speaker’s research focuses on Hermoupolis, not only because it was one of the most important Greek cities of the 19th century with particularly high levels of mortality, but mainly because of its unique registry sources. In the context of his present study and using a plethora of archival sources and oral interviews, Raftakis focuses on the course of the rate of mortality in Hermoupolis and presents us with the reasons that led to its decline in the first decades of the 20th century. Having compiled comprehensive survival tables, his study enables the calculation of mortality rates by age and sex, as well as life expectancy.
The sessions are held between 17:00-19:00 at the Museum of the Bank of Greece, 3 Amerikis Street, Athens, and are open to the public, without requiring prior registration. The lecture will be delivered in Greek.
The complete programme of upcoming lectures is available on the website of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History.
