Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History: “Latin America's experience with the Gold Standard”

13/01/2026 - 13/01/2026 (Seminars)

Bank of Greece, DIESOI

The Historical Archives of the Bank of Greece, in the context of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History, jointly organised with the Athens University of Economics and Business and Panteion University, invite you to the lecture entitled:

“Latin America's experience with the Gold Standard”

Speaker: Nektarios Aslanidis (Universitat Rovira i Virgili)

A few words on the topic:

The speaker will present the results of a study he conducted in collaboration with Gastón Díaz (Universidad de la República, Uruguay) and Matthias Morys (University of York). According to it, Latin America’s experience with the Classical Gold Standard was different from Europe’s in that the gold link was managed by commercial banks and not central banks. They provide econometric evidence in support of Ford’s (1989) famous dictum on Argentina that this made macroeconomic adjustment more difficult, heightening the tension between the external and the internal constraint. Drawing on the LA-6 economies plus early developer Uruguay, this work also outlines similarities and differences between their experiences and explains their move away from a privately-run gold standard towards a banking structure more akin to the European experience in the early 20th century.

The sessions are held between 17:00-19:00 at the Museum of the Bank of Greece, 3 Amerikis Street, Athens, and are open to the public, without requiring prior registration. The lecture will be delivered in English.

The complete programme of upcoming lectures is available on the website of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History.
