Bank of Greece, DIESOI

The Historical Archives of the Bank of Greece, in the context of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History (DIESOI), jointly organised with the Athens University of Economics and Business and Panteion University, invite you to the lecture entitled:

“Maritime labour and welfare policies in 19th century Greece: The establishment and operation of the Seamen’s Pension Fund (1861-1907)”

Speaker: Alkis Kapokakis (University of Crete & IMS)

A few words on the topic:

The lecture aims to present key aspects of the operation of the Seamen’s Pension Fund (Naftiko Apomachiko Tameio or NAT in Greek) during the second half of the 19th century, in order to highlight its role in relation to the shipping industry and the labour market. The speaker will focus on identifying the institutional prerequisites for its operation, as well as the responses that were required from the administrations of the Fund, the stakeholders in the shipping industry and the Greek governments to the successive challenges that arose in the decades following its establishment (1861). As the gradual shrinking of the sailing fleet and the intensification of competition in the main areas of activity of Greek shipowners had a ripple effect on employment and the seafaring profession, calling the terms of the Fund’s sustainability into question early on, this lecture will analyse the policies of social welfare adopted by NAT to support retired seamen and their families.

The sessions are held between 17:00-19:00 at the Museum of the Bank of Greece, 3, Amerikis Street, Athens, and are open to the public, without requiring prior registration. The lecture will be delivered in Greek.

The complete programme of upcoming lectures is available on the website of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History.
