Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History: "The unintended consequences of fighting emerging classes"

28/05/2024 (Seminars)

Bank of Greece, DIESOI

The Historical Archives of the Bank of Greece, in the context of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History, jointly organised with the Athens University of Economics and Business and Panteion University, invite you to the lecture entitled:

"The unintended consequences of fighting emerging classes"

Speaker: Giacomo De Luca (Free University of Bozen-Bolzano)

A few words on the topic:

Defending the status quo at all costs may have disastrous consequences. The speaker will argue that there is a strong link between the surge of support for the Socialist Party after World War I and the subsequent emergence of fascism in Italy. His research provides evidence that the landowner associations and the great presence of local elites played an important role in the rise of fascism, regarded as a credible fix to the risks involved in allowing Socialists to reach power. In a related study, De Luca is also documenting how similar dynamics have supported the diffusion of organised crime in the South of Italy.

The sessions are held between 17:00-19:00 at the Museum of the Bank of Greece, 3, Amerikis Street, Athens, and are open to the public, without requiring prior registration. The lecture will be delivered in English.

The complete programme of upcoming lectures is available on the website of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History
