18/02/2025 (Seminars)

Bank of Greece, DIESOI

The Historical Archives of the Bank of Greece, in the context of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History, jointly organised with the Athens University of Economics and Business and Panteion University, invite you to the lecture entitled:

“Can history produce its own theory of European integration? Core-periphery interactions and the emergence of a regional Titan (or Jotun)”

Speaker: Christos Tsakas (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens)

A few words on the topic:

The lecture aims to offer new insights, from a historical perspective, into the emergence of the present-day EU, venturing a paradigm shift in the history and theory of European integration. The speaker employs the concept of emergence, aiming to go beyond the study of EC/EU institutions and to overcome the agency-structure dichotomy that has characterised the dominant neo-institutionalist accounts. Highlighting the interconnectedness between regional integration and the division of labour in Europe, this lecture challenges the excessive emphasis on institutions and the notion of an intentionally designed “European project”. This lecture deals with core-periphery interactions and the role of business actors in European integration, focusing on countries such as Germany, Greece and Norway, and is based on extensive archival research.

The sessions are held between 17:00-19:00 at the Museum of the Bank of Greece, 3, Amerikis Street, Athens, and are open to the public, without requiring prior registration. The lecture will be delivered in Greek.

The complete programme of upcoming lectures is available on the website of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History.
