04/03/2025 (Seminars)

Bank of Greece, DIESOI

The Historical Archives of the Bank of Greece, in the context of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History, jointly organised with the Athens University of Economics and Business and Panteion University, invite you to the lecture entitled:

“The Red Stain: Political Repression and the Diffusion of Ideology”

Speaker: Elias Dinas (European University Institute)

A few words on the topic:

The speaker will present the results of a study he conducted in collaboration with Alsena Kokalari (European University Institute) on political exile. According to it, although exile is a tool dictators frequently use to mute opposition, we know surprisingly little about its long-term implications on the political culture of the places that receive exiles. The study attempts to fill this gap by focusing on the case of Greece and the exiles to remote islands, instituted against adherents of Communism by two authoritarian regimes and the governments that intervened in between. Combining rich archival data with electoral results and a unique survey across Greek islands, the study shows that exposure to exiles is associated with a persistent left-leaning inclination of the locals. The effects are neither due to compositional changes in the islands nor due to selection into already left-leaning islands. Instead, the evidence points to a direct pattern of cultural transmission, built around the formation of a new collective identity based on the experience of political exile.

The sessions are held between 17:00-19:00 at the Museum of the Bank of Greece, 3, Amerikis Street, Athens, and are open to the public, without requiring prior registration. The lecture will be delivered in Greek.

The complete programme of upcoming lectures is available on the website of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History.
