The Historical Archives of the Bank of Greece, in the context of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History, jointly organised with the Athens University of Economics and Business and Panteion University, invite you to the lecture entitled:
Remnants of civil war: Left coalition and electoral oppression in cold war Greece
Speaker: Vassilis Logothetis (University of Ioannina)
A few words on the topic:
In modern literature there is growing interest in the study of political divisions and their impact on economic development and the political process. The speaker will present a study carried out jointly with G. Melios. The researchers focus on the case of Greece and use the econometric tools of causal inference, based on the geographical variation in the radio signal strength of the illegal station of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) “Voice of Truth”, to examine the electoral success of the United Democratic Left (EDA) in the 1958 elections. Having gathered new quantitative data on the geographical distribution of violence in the 1961 elections, the researchers carry out an empirical examination of the causal relationship between the two. They then use data from individual questionnaires to quantify the long-term impact of the 1961 events on contemporary political beliefs and institutional trust. The findings of the study contribute to understanding the complex effects of civil conflicts on the political and economic landscape, demonstrating how violence and electoral oppression can cause polarisation and have a lasting impact on democratic processes and social trust.
Note that the session of Tuesday, February 20 will be held at the Athens University of Economics and Business, Troias Building, which is on the corner of 2 Troias st. and Spetson and Kimolou, 113 62 at 16:30-18:00.
