3rd Bank of Greece Workshop on Economies of
Eastern European & Mediterranean Countries
Introduction
The Bank of Greece has taken numerous initiatives aiming at following and analysing economic developments in Eastern European and Mediterranean countries. Among its various initiatives is to host annual workshops, which seek to look deeper into different issues that constitute a matter of concern for the particular economies.
The 3rd annual Workshop, “The euro area sovereign debt crisis and its implications for the economies of SEE”, is organized by the Analysis of Economic Developments in Eastern European and Mediterranean Countries Section of Bank of Greece and will be held on 18 May 2012 at the Bank of Greece, 21 E. Venizelos Avenue, 102 50 Athens, Greece.

Objectives
The objective of the Workshop is to identify the risks involved for the countries of Southeast Europe, as a result of the debt crisis in Europe. In particular, the ongoing uncertainty surrounding developments in the debt crisis in the eurozone countries and the possibility of further deterioration are beginning to have a significant negative impact on the economies of Southeast Europe. The rate of growth has showed, already, a significant slowdown. This is largely associated with the gradual decline in exports to European markets while there is a decline in capital inflows. Of course, the greatest danger will come from the possible decline in cross-border flows of bank capital, reflecting the significant capital pressures faced by parent banks (that is, the large European banking groups).
Therefore the evaluation of the significance of these alternative channels of transmission and diffusion of the crisis in the countries of SE Europe and the consequences that will arise will be the central goal of the conference and the main issue for discussion and exchange of views among the participants.
