How can I identify a counterfeit euro banknote?

Genuine banknotes can be easily identified by three simple checks: (a) feel; (b) look; and (c) tilt.

You can find out about the security features of euro banknotes and how they can be verified on the Bank of Greece’s website here and on the European Central Bank’s website here.

What should I do if I find a counterfeit euro banknote?

  1. If you are a citizen and suspect that you have received a counterfeit, you must immediately contact the local police station in order to hand it over.
  2. If you handle large quantities of cash every day, you may come across a suspect banknote. Here are some tips if you are uncertain about a note:

- If you are not sure whether the note is genuine, don’t accept it.

- Politely ask the customer for another note and assume he/she is innocent.

- Immediately inform the local police and/or your security officer about the incident.

- Try to remember as much as you can about the customer.

- If you think you have accepted a counterfeit by mistake, don’t pass it on to someone else, as this is a criminal offence.

- Give the suspect note to the local police. If it is genuine, you will get your money back.

- Don’t put yourself at risk.
