Statement by the Governor of the Bank of Greece Yannis Stournaras following the decision of the ECB Governing Council on the motifs of future euro banknotes
31/01/2025 - Press Releases
“The decision of the Governing Council of the ECB on the motifs of future euro banknotes confirms our commitment to ensuring that euro cash continues to be widely available, accessible and accepted as both a means of payment and a store of value, while also remaining innovative, secure and environmentally friendly. The shortlisted motifs reflect our adherence to the European vision, our shared cultural identity and our pledge to protect the environment.
The selection of Maria Callas among six iconic personalities of European culture that are shortlisted to feature on the new euro banknotes is an immense honour to our country and makes all Greeks proud as members of the European family.
Her journey in art began in Greece, but her artistic identity was forged in Europe, where she travelled, lived and excelled.
With her unparalleled voice and dramatic stage presence, Maria Callas undeniably revolutionised opera, blending the tradition of ancient Greek tragedy with the passion of 19th century opera in Europe.
The voice of Maria Callas and her tumultuous life opened up opera to a much wider audience, beyond connoisseurs and those who were fortunate to see her perform live in prestigious opera houses across the world.”
