Annual Report on Prudential Supervision and Resolution Activities 2025
28/07/2026 - Press Releases
- The Annual Report on Prudential Supervision and Resolution Activities, now being published for the second time, presents the supervisory work of the Bank of Greece in 2025.
- Positive developments took place across all supervised institutions, with particularly significant progress in the fundamentals of Greek credit institutions.
The Report serves as an information tool on the Bank of Greece’s supervisory activities in the fields of microprudential supervision of credit and financial institutions, occupational and private insurance, as well as macroprudential supervision and resolution. It presents, inter alia, the Bank’s actions for the prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing, the progress in liquidation proceedings, the sanctions imposed on legal and natural persons, as well as key developments in the legal and regulatory framework relating to prudential supervision and resolution.
Significant Institutions recorded strong organic profitability, improved their capital adequacy, continued the credit expansion and made strategic investments in Greece and abroad. Less Significant Institutions also improved their profitability and asset quality, while the completion of the operational merger of the two largest among them marked an important milestone. At the same time, the Greek insurance market remained resilient, despite rising claims costs and the increased frequency of extreme weather events.
The positive outlook of the financial system was also confirmed by the assessment conducted by the International Monetary Fund in the context of the Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP), which was completed this year and commended the high standard of supervision exercised by the Bank of Greece.
The challenges for the coming years remain significant and multifaceted. Geopolitical tensions, shifts in international trade policies, uncertainty surrounding the outlook for the global economy, cyber threats and the effects of climate change may have an impact on the profitability, asset quality and operational resilience of supervised institutions.
Against this background, the Bank of Greece’s supervisory priorities focus on strengthening the resilience of supervised institutions to geopolitical risks and macroeconomic uncertainty, safeguarding their capital adequacy, managing climate-related risks and further strengthening corporate governance.
At the same time, particular emphasis is placed on monitoring digital transition, as institutions adopting innovative technologies, such as artificial intelligence, are called upon to effectively manage both the risks arising from their use and the growing cybersecurity risks stemming from the malicious use of frontier artificial intelligence models.
