Virtual Workshop: “Financing climate change adaptation: frameworks, instruments and case studies”

25/02/2025 - Press Releases

On Tuesday, 25 February 2025, the Bank of Greece, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Energy and the Green Fund, organised the second workshop on “Financing climate change adaptation: frameworks, instruments and case studies” as part of its dedicated series of workshops.

Climate crisis is unfolding, and extreme weather events are constantly increasing in frequency and intensity. Adapting to climate change is of paramount importance, in order to minimise the adverse environmental, social and economic impacts of the climate crisis. Although the need for adaptation is increasingly being acknowledged worldwide, funding levels remain limited and significantly lower, compared to the funds directed towards climate change mitigation. Moreover, adaptation financing at present relies primarily on public resources, underscoring the need to mobilise private capital as well.

Organised by the Bank of Greece, this series of workshops, under the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project, aims to highlight and advance financing for climate change adaptation. During the first workshop, the participants discussed the key role of the financial sector and the significance of synergies among stakeholders in promoting financing of adaptation to climate change. The second workshop focused on specific frameworks that are used for the purposes of adaptation financing, as well as on case studies from the financial system, providing practical insights and actionable strategies for an effective financing of climate change adaptation.

Participants included:

- George Protopapas, Green Fund

- Sean Carmody, Network for Greening the Financial System and Australian Prudential Regulation Authority

- Gary Power, United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative

- Sean Kidney, Climate Bonds Initiative
