Statistics on Pension Funds: Q4 2020

The Bank of Greece, in accordance with its obligations to the European Central Bank, collects and compiles detailed statistics on the main balance sheet items of pension funds. The information is collected on a quarterly basis, under Regulation (EU) 2018/231 of the European Central Bank of 26 January 2018 and the Bank of Greece Governor’s Act 2681/21.12.2018.
The data are collected for statistical purposes by Occupational Insurance Funds that operate according to Law 3029/2002 and by Institutions for Occupational Retirement Provision, according to Law 4680/2020.

In the fourth quarter of 2020, total assets of pension funds increased to €1,648 million from €1,591 million in the previous quarter and €1,612 million in the fourth quarter of 2019.
In further detail, the overall deposits of pension funds decreased to €212 million at the end of the fourth quarter of 2020, from €242 million in the previous quarter and €192 million in the fourth quarter of 2019. Deposits accounted for 12.8% of total assets in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared with 15.2% in the previous quarter and 11.9% in the fourth quarter of 2019.
Total holdings of debt securities decreased to €731 million in the fourth quarter of 2020 from €737 million in the previous quarter and €819 million in the fourth quarter of 2019; their share in total assets decreased to 44.3% compared with 46.3% in the previous quarter and 50.8% in the fourth quarter of 2019.
Total holdings of investment fund shares increased to €388 million from €354 million in the previous quarter and €346 million in the fourth quarter of 2019 and their share in total assets increased to 23.5% compared with 22.3% in the previous quarter and 21.5% in the fourth quarter of 2019.
Total holdings of shares and other equity excluding investment fund shares increased to €276 million in the fourth quarter of 2020 from €214 million in the previous quarter and €199 million in the fourth quarter of 2019; their share in total assets increased to 16.7%, compared with 13.5% in the previous quarter and 12.3% in the fourth quarter of 2019.
