Overview of the Greek Financial System – January 2017

09/02/2017 - Press Releases

The Overview of the Greek Financial System, a bi-annual publication of the Financial Stability Department of the Bank of Greece, was posted today on the Bank of Greece website. The January 2017 overview focuses on the period of the first half of 2016, with references to the third quarter of 2016 regarding economic and fiscal developments, credit risk, liquidity and market risks, as well as the impact of capital controls.

The January 2017 Overview of the Greek Financial System assesses developments, highlights the principal systemic risk factors of the Greek banking sector and discusses transactions with electronic payment instruments. The Overview also includes a chapter on banks’ operational targets on non-performing exposures and capital adequacy. It also includes two Special Features: one on the impact of capital controls on financial stability and the economy and one on the impact of potential transfers of non-performing exposures on the capital adequacy of credit institutions.

The assessment of systemic risks provides a valuable tool for the conduct of macroprudential policy, which aims at mitigating the systemic risks of the financial system and should complement microprudential supervision of banks, which focuses on the robustness of individual institutions.
