Meeting of the Governor of the Bank of Greece with the Leader of the Opposition

The Governor of the Bank of Greece, Mr Georgios Provopoulos,
had a meeting today with Mr Giorgos Papandreou, President of the Panhellenic
Socialist Movement (PASOK), following Mr
Papandreou's request, at PASOK's headquarters. The meeting focused on current
international and domestic financial and macroeconomic developments. Governor
Provopoulos discussed aspects of the ongoing financial turmoil, the evolution of
the international prices of oil, food and other commodities and the negative
effects of these factors on the real economy; the duration of these effects is
as yet uncertain. He pointed out that, in spite of the adverse external
environment, the current evolution of macroeconomic aggregates shows that Greek
economy remains relatively resilient. Finally, he stressed that, under the
prevailing international conditions, the deepening and speeding-up of fiscal
consolidation and structural reforms is the only safe way to support and boost
the growth process in Greece.
