Statistics on Pension Funds: Q1 2021

- Total assets of pension funds were €1,702 million in the first quarter of 2021, almost unchanged compared with the previous quarter.
- The number of pension funds members at the end of 2020 was 160,900 compared with 159,287 at the end of 2019.
In the first quarter of 2021, total assets of pension funds were €1,702 million compared with €1,698 million in the previous quarter and €1,483 million in the first quarter of 2020.
In further detail, the overall deposits of pension funds increased to €228 million at the end of the first quarter of 2021, from €212 million in the previous quarter and €265 million in the first quarter of 2020. Deposits accounted for 13.4% of total assets in the first quarter of 2021, compared with 12.5% in the previous quarter and 17.9% in the first quarter of 2020.
Total holdings of debt securities decreased to €726 million in the first quarter of 2021 from €739 million in the previous quarter and €728 million in the first quarter of 2020; their share in total assets decreased to 42.7% compared with 43.5% in the previous quarter and 49.1% in the first quarter of 2020.
Total holdings of investment fund shares stood at €407 million from €406 million in the previous quarter and €298 million in the first quarter of 2020; their share in total assets remained unchanged at 23.9% compared with the previous quarter, against 20.1% in the first quarter of 2020.
Total holdings of equity increased to €292 million from €279 million in the previous quarter and €143 million in the first quarter of 2020; their share in total assets increased to 17.2%, compared with 16.4% in the previous quarter and 9.7% in the first quarter of 2020.
The number of total pension funds members at the end of 2020 increased to 160,900 compared with 159,287 members in the previous year. In further detail, at the end of 2020 active members accounted for 112,324, while deferred members were 23,213 and retired members 25,363.
