SSM Senior Management visit to the Bank of Greece
28/04/2026 - Press Releases
The SSM Director General for Universal and Diversified Banks, Mr Thijs van Woerden, together with the Deputy Director General, Mr Rolf Klug, paid a visit today to the Bank of Greece, as part of their ongoing programme of regular engagements with the National Competent Authorities (NCAs), aimed at strengthening cooperation and facilitating the exchange of views.
During the visit, they met with the Deputy Governor responsible for prudential supervision and member of the Supervisory Board, Ms Christina Papaconstantinou, as well as with senior executives of the Bank of Greece. The discussions focused, inter alia, on the significant improvement of the Greek economy and the Greek banking system in recent years, the current geopolitical crisis, and the challenges ahead.
Furthermore, they met with supervisors of the four Significant Institutions to discuss issues related to supervision and cooperation between the two authorities, as well as key risks and emerging challenges. In addition, managers and staff involved in the supervision of Less Significant Institutions (LSIs) met with the SSM Director General for Specialized Institutions and LSIs, Mr Thomas Jorgensen, and discussed supervisory priorities for Greek LSIs.
The discussions took place in a positive and cooperative spirit and concluded with a shared view by both institutions that, despite the substantial progress achieved, continued vigilance remains essential in the face of emerging risks, leaving no room for complacency.
