Statistics on Pension Funds: Q2 2024

- Total assets of pension funds increased by 3.0% to €2,348 million at the end of the second quarter of 2024 from €2,279 million in the previous quarter.
Total assets of compulsory and non-compulsory occupational pension funds (“pension funds”) increased by €69 million compared with the previous quarter and stood at €2,348 million in the second quarter of 2024.
In further detail, the overall deposits of pension funds increased by 7 million and stood at €72 million at the end of the second quarter of 2024. Deposits’ share in total assets increased to 3.1% from 2.8% in the previous quarter.
Total holdings of debt securities remained broadly unchanged at €1,063 million in the second quarter of 2024, as net purchases of foreign securities were partially offset by net sales of domestic securities and a general decrease in securities’ prices. Debt securities’ share decreased to 45.3% of total assets at the end of the second quarter of 2024, compared with 46.5 % in the previous quarter.
Total holdings of investment fund shares increased to €754 million from €728 million in the previous quarter. Their share in total assets stood at 32.1% compared with 32.0% in the previous quarter. The increase of these holdings is mainly due to net purchases of domestic investment fund shares.
Equity holdings increased to €410 million in the second quarter of 2024 from €379 million in the previous quarter, mainly due to net purchases of foreign equities. The share of equity in total assets increased to 17.4% from 16.6% in the previous quarter.
