About the book

Rapid developments in all sectors of social activity, unforeseen risks – such as those generated by the COVID-19 pandemic – and the complexity of the financial system make financial literacy a necessary precondition for the well-being of the citizens and a necessary skill for the 21st century. More particularly, the management of personal finance, of household finance and of the finance of SMEs (the latter forming the backbone of Greek economy) require more financial skills and knowledge than ever before.

Financial literacy is a life-long, continuous and constant process, which according to top organizations around the globe (such as OECD, the World Bank and UNICEF) would better start in primary education. The younger the students are, the easier it is for them to embrace key economic notions and to get a proper education regarding these notions; an education that will allow them to later become knowledgeable citizens.

The Bank of Greece thinks that the issue of financial literacy is very important and takes up actions in this vein, both in the primary and secondary levels of education, and also in universities.

In this framework, the Bank of Greece has collaborated with Dr. Nikolaos D. Philippas, Professor of Finance in the University of Piraeus and a pioneer in children’s financial literacy in Greece, for the publication of this abecedary of financial terms. The abecedary includes more than 120 key entries, accompanied by nine short and comprehensive stories that contribute to a fuller understanding of the notions involved.
