About the catalogue
The bilingual publication entitled “Ξενοφών Ζολώτας. Ο Καθηγητής και η Τράπεζα της Ελλάδος / Xenofon Zolotas. The Professor and the Bank of Greece” is the accompanying catalogue to the namesake periodical exhibition at the Museum of the Bank of Greece; an exhibition organized by the Centre for Culture, Research & Documentation for the anniversary of 110 years from Zolotas’s birth and ten from his death. The concept of the exhibition was to present an overview of the many facets of Zolotas’s contribution to the economic development of Greece, while focusing on his role as a central banker; the opening of the exhibition took place in December 2014.
Apart from three times Governor of the Bank of Greece (1944-1945, 1955-1967 and 1974-1981), Zolotas also served as University professor (1928-1968), member of the Academy of Athens (1952-2004), Minister in interim governments (1952, 1974) and Prime Minister (1989-1990). The presence of Xenophon Zolotas in the public arena, spanning several decades, coincided with developments and changes which, albeit challenging and sometimes tragic, always carried the expectation of a better future.
