Yannis Stinis (1914-2001) worked at the National Mint of the Bank of Greece, preparing preliminary designs and elements or sides for banknotes, while also devoting himself in his own painterly and printmaking oeuvre.
As a dedicated painter and a tireless printmaker, he toiled over representative works that incorporated his persistent and meticulous intention to struggle with the medium that he used each time.
His painting involves mainly landscapes. In the scenes that he chooses to depict, his interest in capturing the impression is obvious – whether this impression refers to the surroundings and the conditions that prevail at a particular moment or focuses on the portrayal of some ad hoc human activity.
Same as painting, printmaking also provided fertile ground for Stinis. His work at designing and engraving banknotes and coins allowed him to familiarise himself further with various techniques of which he made good use in his private printmaking activity, producing a series of characteristic prints.
Yannis Stinis stood out for his imaginative and painstaking work, as well as for his devotion to Art until the end: his last painting dates back to 1999, just two years before his death.
The album Yannis Stinis. Route through time summarises the totality of the artist’s work and represents the first substantial effort to record and highlight it in a systematic way.
