According to Greek architect Demetrios Pikionis, Yannoulis Chalepas was the modern Greek artist who, no matter how grand a name attributed to him was, it would still be inferior to his greatness. Chalepas, creator of the iconic Sleeping Female Figure, left an indelible mark on sculpture as it evolved in the 19th and the 20th century in Greece. At the same time, he was a “legend” of a tragic fate, having to bear not just his mental illness, but also his confinement to a lunatic asylum, before returning triumphantly to his art after a number of years.

Research on Yannoulis Chalepas is particularly wide and includes significant scholars who have contributed to a study of his life and work, many a time from different scientific angles. At the same time and despite the plethora of publications on the artist, there remain issues that involve both his sculpting and his life, which necessitate new interpretations of the facts. The papers presented in this book focus on the artist and his work and wish to prompt a rethinking of some of the prevalent views, but also to present new information.

The papers as they appear in the book, along with English abstracts, are the following:

Alexandra Goulaki-Voutyra, “Yanoulis Chalepas: Reading between the drawings and the sculptures”

Yannis Bolis, “The clacissist Chalepas”

Charis Kanellopoulou, “On the ‘intellectuality of form’: The Satyr in the work of Yannoulis Chalepas and its aesthetic variations in his classicist and ‘post-sanity’ creative periods”

Dimitris Pavlopoulos, “The Sleeping Female Figure by Chalepas. From plaster to marble”

Manos Stefanidis, “Peeking into the sculptor’s studio”

Costas Danousis, “Yannoulis Chalepas: Moments of a tragic life…”

Tonia Giannoudaki, “National Gallery-Alexandros Soutsos Museum’s contribution to the preservation and promotion of Yannoulis Chalepas’s oeuvre”
