Bank credit and deposits: August 2026

- The annual growth rate of total credit extended to the domestic economy stood at 3.5% in August 2026, unchanged from the previous month.

- The annual growth rate of total deposits increased to 9.3% in August 2026 from 9.0% in the previous month.

- Deposits placed by the private sector increased by €2,965 million in August 2026, compared with a decrease of €2,014 million in the previous month.

I. Credit to the domestic economy

Τhe monthly net flow of total bank credit was negative by €38 million in August 2026, compared with a negative net flow of €3,889 million in the previous month.

Ι.1 Credit to the general government

In August 2026, the monthly net flow of bank credit to the general government was negative by €516 million, compared with a negative net flow of €1,367 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at -2.4% from -2.0% in the previous month.

Ι.2 Credit to the private sector

In August 2026, the annual growth rate of bank credit to the private sector increased to 7.1% from 6.8% in the previous month. The monthly net flow of credit was positive by €478 million, compared with a negative net flow of €2,522 million in the previous month.

Ι.2.1 Credit to corporations

In August 2026, the monthly net flow of bank credit to corporations was positive by €508 million, compared with a negative net flow of €2,480 million in the previous month, while the annual growth rate increased to 9.4% from 9.0% in the previous month. In particular, the annual growth rate of credit to non-financial corporations (NFCs) stood at 9.0% from 9.2% in the previous month; the monthly net flow was positive by €34 million, compared with a negative net flow of €1,724 million in the previous month. The annual growth rate of credit to insurance corporations and other financial intermediaries increased to 12.5% from 7.1% in the previous month; the monthly net flow was positive by €474 million, compared with a negative net flow of €757 million in the previous month.

Ι.2.2 Credit to sole proprietors and unincorporated partnerships

In August 2026, the monthly net flow of bank credit to sole proprietors and unincorporated partnerships was negative by €21 million, compared with a negative net flow of €83 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at -3.1% from -3.0% in the previous month.

Ι.2.3 Credit to individuals and private non-profit institutions

In August 2026, the monthly net flow of bank credit to individuals and private non-profit institutions was negative by €10 million, compared with a positive net flow of €41 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at 2.4% from 2.5% in the previous month.

II. Deposits by the domestic economy with the domestic credit institutions

In August 2026, the monthly net flow of total deposits was positive by €3,197 million, compared with a negative net flow of €2,190 million in the previous month.

ΙΙ.1 Deposits placed by the general government

In August 2026, deposits placed by the general government increased by €232 million, compared with a decrease of €175 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate decreased to 9.8% from 10.7% in the previous month.

ΙΙ.2 Deposits placed by the private sector

In August 2026, deposits placed by the private sector increased by €2,965 million, compared with a decrease of €2,014 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate increased to 9.3% from 8.9% in the previous month.

ΙΙ.2.1 Corporate deposits

In August 2026, corporate deposits increased by €2,380 million, compared with a decrease of €2,254 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate increased to 25.2% from 23.1% in the previous month. In particular, deposits from NFCs increased by €2,393 million, against a decrease of €2,443 million in the previous month. Deposits placed by insurance corporations and other financial intermediaries decreased by €13 million, compared with an increase of €189 million in the previous month.

ΙΙ.2.2 Deposits placed by households and private non-profit institutions

In August 2026, deposits placed by households and private non-profit institutions increased by €585 million, compared with an increase of €240 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate decreased to 3.6% from 3.9% in the previous month.

Notes:

1. The general government includes central government, local government and social security funds.

2. Deposits include repos.

3. The Bank of Greece is not included in domestic credit institutions.
