Bank credit and deposits: February 2026

- The annual growth rate of total credit extended to the domestic economy decreased to 4.2% in February 2026 from 4.9% in the previous month.

- The annual growth rate of total deposits stood at 5.3% in February 2026, unchanged from the previous month.

- Deposits placed by the private sector decreased by €445 million in February 2026, compared with a decrease of €5,184 million in the previous month.

I. Credit to the domestic economy

 Τhe monthly net flow of total bank credit was negative by €1,686 million in February 2026, compared with a negative net flow of €2,485 million in the previous month.

I.1 Credit to the general government

In February 2026, the monthly net flow of bank credit to the general government was negative by €2,950 million, compared with a negative net flow of €315 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate decreased to -1.0% from 0.6% in the previous month.

I.2 Credit to the private sector

In February 2026, the annual growth rate of bank credit to the private sector stood at 7.4% from 7.6% in the previous month. The monthly net flow of credit was positive by €1,264 million, compared with a negative net flow of €2,170 million in the previous month.

I.2.1 Credit to corporations

In February 2026, the monthly net flow of bank credit to corporations was positive by €1,243 million, compared with a negative net flow of €1,975 million in the previous month, while the annual growth rate decreased to 9.9% from 10.3% in the previous month. In particular, the annual growth rate of credit to non-financial corporations (NFCs) decreased to 10.3% from 10.9% in the previous month; the monthly net flow was positive by €965 million, compared with a negative net flow of €1,214 million in the previous month. The annual growth rate of credit to insurance corporations and other financial intermediaries increased to 5.8% from 4.6% in the previous month; the monthly net flow was positive by €279 million, compared with a negative net flow of €761 million in the previous month.

I.2.2 Credit to sole proprietors and unincorporated partnerships

In February 2026, the monthly net flow of bank credit to sole proprietors and unincorporated partnerships was negative by €6 million, compared with a negative net flow of €116 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at -1.8% from -1.6% in the previous month.

I.2.3 Credit to individuals and private non-profit institutions

In February 2026, the monthly net flow of bank credit to individuals and private non-profit institutions was positive by €28 million, compared with a negative net flow of €79 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at 2.6% from 2.4% in the previous month.

II. Deposits by the domestic economy with the domestic credit institutions

In February 2026, the monthly net flow of total deposits was negative by €511 million, compared with a negative net flow of €4,845 million in the previous month.

II.1 Deposits placed by the general government

In February 2026, deposits placed by the general government decreased by €66 million, compared with an increase of €339 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate decreased to -0.8% from 11.5% in the previous month.

II.2 Deposits placed by the private sector

In February 2026, deposits placed by the private sector decreased by €445 million, compared with a decrease of €5,184 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate increased to 5.6% from 5.0% in the previous month.

II.2.1 Corporate deposits

In February 2026, corporate deposits decreased by €519 million, compared with a decrease of €4,429 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate increased to 10.9% from 9.0% in the previous month. In particular, deposits from NFCs decreased by €824 million, against a decrease of €4,574 million in the previous month. Deposits placed by insurance corporations and other financial intermediaries increased by €305 million, compared with an increase of €145 million in the previous month.

II.2.2 Deposits placed by households and private non-profit institutions

In February 2026, deposits placed by households and private non-profit institutions increased by €74 million, compared with a decrease of €756 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at 3.9% from 3.7% in the previous month.

Notes:

1. The general government includes central government, local government and social security funds.

2. Deposits include repos.

3. The Bank of Greece is not included in domestic credit institutions.
