Bank credit and deposits: May 2021

  • The annual growth rate of total credit extended to the domestic economy decreased to 16.6% in May 2021 from 17.4% in the previous month.
  • The annual growth rate of credit to the private sector decreased to 2.2% from 2.4% in the previous month.
  • The annual growth rate of total deposits increased to 11.2% from 10.8% in the previous month.
  • Deposits placed by the private sector increased by €359 million in May 2021, compared with an increase of €3,126 million in the previous month.

In May 2021, the annual growth rate of total credit extended to the domestic economy decreased to 16.6% from 17.4% in the previous month, while the monthly net flow was positive by €2,402 million, compared with a positive net flow of €4,454 million in the previous month.

The annual growth rate of total deposits decreased to 11.2% from 10.8% in the previous month, while the monthly net flow was positive by €386 million, compared with a positive net flow of €3,329 million in April 2021.

 

  1. Credit to the domestic economy

    Ι.1 Credit to the general government

    In May 2021, the monthly net flow of credit to the general government was positive by €2,419 million, compared with a positive net flow of €5,241 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate decreased to 72.8% from 81.8% in the previous month.

    Ι.2 Credit to the private sector

    In May 2021, the annual growth rate of credit to the private sector decreased to 2.2% from 2.4% in the previous month. The monthly net flow of credit was negative by €17 million, compared with a negative net flow of €787 million in the previous month.

     

    Ι.2.1 Credit to corporations

    In May 2021, the monthly net flow of credit to corporations was positive by €68 million, compared with a negative net flow of €657 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate decreased to 6.2% from 6.7% in the previous month. In particular, the annual growth rate of credit to non-financial corporations (NFCs) decreased to 6.2% from 6.7% in the previous month; the monthly net flow was positive by €49 million, compared with a negative net flow of €894 million in the previous month. The annual growth rate of credit to insurance corporations and other financial intermediaries decreased to 6.4% from 6.8% in the previous month; the monthly net flow was positive by €19 million, compared with a positive net flow of €237 million in the previous month.

     

    Ι.2.2 Credit to sole proprietors and unincorporated partnerships

    In May 2021, the monthly net flow of credit to sole proprietors and unincorporated partnerships was negative by €9 million, compared with a positive net flow of €7 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate decreased to 3.9% from 4.2% in the previous month.

     

    Ι.2.3 Credit to individuals and private non-profit institutions

    In May 2021, the monthly net flow of credit to individuals and private non-profit institutions was negative by €77 million, compared with a negative net flow of €138 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate remained at -2.5% unchanged from the previous month.

     

  2. Deposits by the domestic economy with the domestic credit institutions

ΙΙ.1 Deposits placed by the general government

In May 2021, deposits placed by the general government increased by €27 million, compared with an increase of €203 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at -22.2% compared with -33.7% in the previous month.

ΙΙ.2       Deposits placed by the private sector

In May 2021, deposits placed by the private sector increased by €359 million, compared with an increase of €3,126 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate decreased to 13.7% from 14.8% in the previous month.

ΙΙ.2.1 Corporate deposits

In May 2021, corporate deposits increased by €281 million, compared with an increase of €1,317 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate increased to 21.4% from 15.9% in the previous month. In particular, deposits from NFCs increased by €1,498 million, against a decrease of €528 million in the previous month. Deposits placed by insurance corporations and other financial intermediaries decreased by €1,217 million, compared with an increase of €1,845 million in the previous month.

ΙΙ.2.2 Deposits placed by households and private non-profit institutions

In May 2021, deposits placed by households and private non-profit institutions increased by €78 million, compared with an increase of €1,809 million in the previous month; the annual growth stood at 9.4% unchanged from the previous month.
