Conference on “Public Debt: Past lessons, future challenges”

- An event bringing together leading experts from Greece and abroad.

- The focus of the sessions is divided between long-term historical approaches and recent experiences and policy challenges.

An international conference on “Public Debt: Past lessons, future challenges” will be held by the Bank of Greece at its Head Office in Athens, on Thursday, 7 November 2024. The conference, to be opened by Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras, brings together prominent academics, experts and policymakers to discuss the history, evolution and prospects of public debt, both from a Greek and an international comparative perspective. 

Following Governor Stournaras’ opening address, Barry Eichengreen, Professor of Economics and Political Science, University of California, Berkeley (USA), will deliver the keynote lecture. Two sessions will follow: the first on “Long-Run Perspectives and Parallels” and the second on “Recent Experiences and Prospects”. The conference will conclude with two panel discussions. The first, focusing on the interaction between debt and monetary policy, will feature Mr Stournaras, Philip R. Lane, Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank, and Pablo Hernández de Cos, former Governor of the Bank of Spain. In the second, Mr Stournaras, Kostis Hatzidakis, Minister of National Economy and Finance, and Nikos Vettas, General Director of the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE), will discuss the prospects of the Greek economy.

Conference programme outline:

09:30 Opening address, Yannis Stournaras.

10:00 Keynote lecture: “A History of Recent Public Debt in Three Chapters”, Barry Eichengreen.

11:00-13:00 “Long-Run Perspectives and Parallels” – Rui Esteves, Tobias Straumann, Kim Oosterlinck and Andreas Kakridis. The two sub-sessions will be chaired by Bank of Greece Directors Heather Gibson and Daphne Papadopoulou, respectively.

14:30-16:30 “Recent Experiences and Perspectives” – Jeromin Zettelmeyer, Marco Buti, George Chouliarakis and Philip R. Lane. The two sub-sessions will be chaired by Bank of Greece Directors George Hondroyiannis and Dimitris Malliaropulos, respectively.

16:30-17:30 Panel Discussion 1: “Lessons Learned from Past Debt Crises and Implications for Monetary Policy” – Yannis Stournaras, Philip R. Lane and Pablo Hernández de Cos.

17:30-18:30 Panel Discussion 2: “The Greek Economy – Facing the Future” – Yannis Stournaras, Kostis Hatzidakis and Nikos Vettas.
