Bank credit and deposits: August 2024

- The annual growth rate of total credit extended to the domestic economy stood at 3.8% in August 2024, almost unchanged from the previous month.

- The annual growth rate of total deposits increased to 1.9% in August 2024, compared to 1.4% in the previous month.

- Deposits placed by the private sector increased by €1,401 million in August 2024, compared with a decrease of €607 million in the previous month.

I. Credit to the domestic economy

Τhe monthly net flow of total credit was negative by €371 million in August 2024, compared with a negative net flow of €1,242 million in the previous month.

Ι.1 Credit to the general government

In August 2024, the monthly net flow of credit to the general government was negative by €473 million, compared with a negative net flow of €100 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at -0.8%, compared with -0.4% in the previous month.

Ι.2 Credit to the private sector

In August 2024, the annual growth rate of credit to the private sector increased to 6.9% from 6.4% in the previous month. The monthly net flow of credit was positive by €102 million, compared with a negative net flow of €1,143 million in the previous month.

Ι.2.1 Credit to corporations

In August 2024, the monthly net flow of credit to corporations was positive by €159 million, compared with a negative net flow of €1,066 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate increased to 11.3% from 10.6% in the previous month. In particular, the annual growth rate of credit to non-financial corporations (NFCs) increased to 10.5% from 9.8% in the previous month; the monthly net flow was positive by €110 million, compared with a negative net flow of €1,041 million in the previous month. The annual growth rate of credit to insurance corporations and other financial intermediaries increased to 18.5% from 17.1% in the previous month; the monthly net flow was positive by €49 million, compared with a negative net flow of €25 million in the previous month.

Ι.2.2 Credit to sole proprietors and unincorporated partnerships

In August 2024, the monthly net flow of credit to sole proprietors and unincorporated partnerships was negative by €10 million, compared with a negative net flow of €67 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate increased to 0.4%, compared with 0.2% in the previous month.

Ι.2.3 Credit to individuals and private non-profit institutions

In August 2024, the monthly net flow of credit to individuals and private non-profit institutions was negative by €48 million, compared with a negative net flow of €9 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at -0.7%, compared with -0.8% in the previous month.

II. Deposits by the domestic economy with the domestic credit institutions

In August 2024, the monthly net flow of total deposits was positive by €1,337 million, compared with a negative net flow of €868 million in July 2024.

ΙΙ.1 Deposits placed by the general government

In August 2024, deposits placed by the general government decreased by €64 million, compared with a decrease of €261 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at -27.2%, compared with -24.6% in the previous month.

ΙΙ.2 Deposits placed by the private sector

In August 2024, deposits placed by the private sector increased by €1,401 million, compared with a decrease of €607 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate increased to 3.3% from 2.7% in the previous month.

ΙΙ.2.1 Corporate deposits

In August 2024, corporate deposits increased by €366 million, compared with a decrease of €780 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate increased to 5.4% from 4.0% in the previous month. In particular, deposits from NFCs increased by €328 million, against a decrease of €781 million in the previous month. Deposits placed by insurance corporations and other financial intermediaries increased by €38 million, compared with an increase of €1 million in the previous month.

ΙΙ.2.2 Deposits placed by households and private non-profit institutions

In August 2024, deposits placed by households and private non-profit institutions increased by €1,035 million, compared with an increase of €173 million in the previous month; the annual growth rate increased to 2.6% from 2.2%, in the previous month.

Notes:

1. The general government includes central government, local government and social security funds.

2. Deposits include repos.

3. The Bank of Greece is not included in domestic credit institutions.
