Future banknotes

The first euro banknotes were introduced on 1 January 2002.

Now, more than 20 years later, the European Central Bank is preparing for a future banknote series. Redesigning future banknotes is part of the process for developing the future banknote series. The ECB aims at ensuring that banknotes remain available and accessible and that they continue to be a secure and efficient means of payment. Moreover, the ECB focuses on delivering banknotes that are as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible.

The new theme and the new designs will be decided by the Governing Council of the ECB, taking into account opinions voiced by the public in surveys, as well as advice from expert groups. The ECB’s aim is to ensure that the theme and designs selected are relatable for all Europeans.

The final decision on both the new theme and designs, and on when to launch the new series, will be taken at a later stage by the ECB’s Governing Council.
