Information for customers interested in purchasing and selling gold sovereigns from the Bank of Greece.
The Bank of Greece purchases and sells gold sovereigns at:
- its Head Office, 14 Stadiou st., Athens (interested parties should first call +30 210 320 2788 to book an appointment)
- its Thessaloniki Βranch, 4 Tsimiski st. (interested parties should first call +30 2310 591157-158 to book an appointment)
- its
Heraklion Βranch, 25th August 25 str., from beginning of February 2024 (interested

- its Patras Branch, 49-51, Ag. Andreou str, (interested parties should first call tel. +30 2610-639744, +30 2610-639742 to book an appointment)
For all transactions, regardless of the amount, interested parties will be required to produce (a) a valid ID identification card or passport and (b) an original public document (i.e. a “Notice of Tax Due” from a Tax Office – D.O.Y.) or recent utility bill stating their Taxpayer Identification Number.
All sales of gold sovereigns defective in appearance by the Bank of Greece shall be subject to a commission of 5‰ with a minimum of €3.
- Transactions up to €10,000, including commission, shall be executed at the selling prices quoted in the Price bulletin for gold and gold coins issued by the Bank of Greece and posted on its website. Each price bulletin shall remain in effect until a newer one is issued.
- For transactions up to €10,000, including commission, by bank cheque, the amount on the cheque must not exceed €9,500 (any remainder to be paid in cash).
- For transactions exceeding €10,000, the price shall be determined on the basis of the current market price of gold at the time of the transaction.
- For transactions exceeding €500, payment shall be made at the counter by instant credit transfer or by submitting a bank cheque to the customer’s order or by card via POS.
- For purchases exceeding €15,000, whether carried out in one transaction or in a series of transactions by one and the same customer, the following shall also be required (where the customer is a natural person):
- The latest “Notice of Tax Due” received by the customer from a Tax Office (D.O.Y.).
- Proof of current residence (evinced by a recent utility bill or valid lease agreement certified by a Tax Office – D.O.Y.).
- Proof of current employment and business address (any one of the following: letter from current employer, latest pay slip, professional ID card or document from a social security fund).
- A valid residence permit (for non-EU citizens).
- A valid phone number.
Only originals of the required documents will be accepted, in compliance with the legal framework on the prevention of money laundering and terrorism financing.
Information for customers interested in selling gold sovereigns to the Bank of Greece
For all transactions, regardless of the amount, interested parties will be required to produce: (a) valid identification (ID card or passport) and (b) an original public document (e.g. a “Notice of Tax Due” from a Tax Office – D.O.Y.) or recent utility bill stating their Taxpayer Identification Number.
- Transactions up to €10,000 shall be executed at the buying prices quoted in the Price bulletin for gold and gold coins issued by the Bank of Greece and posted on its website. Each price bulletin shall remain in effect until a newer one is issued.
- For transactions exceeding €10,000, the price shall be determined on the basis of the current market price of gold at the time of the transaction.
- For transactions exceeding €500, payment shall be credited to an account in the name of the customer, who will be required to provide full bank account details, including passbook and IBAN.
- For sales exceeding €15,000, whether carried out in one transaction or in a series of transactions by one and the same customer, the following shall also be required (where the customer is a natural person):
- The latest “Notice of Tax Due” received by the customer from a Tax Office (D.O.Y.).
