Research and other activities

Beyond its strictly archival functions, the Historical Archive of the Bank of Greece (IATE) develops a series of research activities and collaborations with universities, research centres and organisations.

It participates in the Eurosystem’s central bank archives network under the European Central Bank (ECB) and is a member of the European Association for Banking and Financial History (eabh), as well as the Society of Greek Archivists (EAE).

The Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History (DIESOI) is a joint initiative of the Historical Archives of the Bank of Greece, the Department of International and European Economic Studies (DIEES) of the Athens University of Economics and Business and the Department of Political Science and History of Panteion University

The Interdisciplinary Seminar in Economic History (DIESOI) is a joint initiative of the Historical Archives of the Bank of Greece, the Department of International and European Economic Studies (DIEES) of the Athens University of Economics and Business and the Department of Political Science and History of Panteion University, which aspires to provide a forum for scholars with an interest in economic history.

The seminar is addressed to anyone interested in economic history. Its focus is on young researchers and new methods, in an aim to foster an interdisciplinary exchange of views and ideas, rather than technical discussions targeting expert audiences. The sessions will be held at the Museum of the Bank of Greece, at 3, Amerikis Street, Athens, and will be open to the public, without requiring prior registration. The seminar will be conducted in Greek, unless otherwise indicated.

Unpublished documents, confidential reports, business correspondence and personal testimonies co-exist in a series that was introduced in 2019 and showcases the richness of the Bank of Greece archival holdings.

Unpublished documents, confidential reports, business correspondence and personal testimonies co-exist in a series that was introduced in 2019 and showcases the richness of the Bank of Greece archival holdings. Each book focuses on a pivotal event, a critical period or a significant person that are highlighted through unpublished documents drawn from IATE records. Specialised scientists select, combine and discuss the archival documents, helping the reader navigate through the primary sources and develop his/her own, unmediated relationship with history’s raw materials.

The IATE’s oral history programme was launched in 2018 and aims at gathering oral testimonies about the activities of the Bank of Greece

The IATE’s oral history programme was launched in 2018 and aims at gathering oral testimonies about the activities of the Bank of Greece, both at the level of day-to-day business and interactions, which give rise to business practices and constitute the staff’s daily routine, and at the level of senior management, which cooperates with the State, the banking system and other European and international organisations to formulate monetary and economic policy.
